Chapter Twenty-Three

Deflection

The next morning, instead of Alex pushing everyone to leave as early as possible, he sat quietly by the fire. When everyone else was packed up and ready to leave, he said, “Monda-ak and I are staying here. I want to talk to these people.”

“That’s dangerous,” Versa-eh said. “I will stay with you.”

“It’s a waste of time,” Destin-ak said. “There is really no need.”

“Don’t worry,” Alex answered both of them. “I will be ready to leave by the time they arrive. I just want to speak to them. If they are as you say, Destin-ak, I will have a conversation with them, then be on my way. I will catch up to you before you stop for the night or shortly thereafter.”

The warrior known as Ristan-ak stepped forward. He had spoken less than a dozen sentences since Alex had met him, but now he said, “You should not do this.”

When people who rarely speak finally do, Alex tended to listen. He looked at the young man for a long moment, searching his face, then finally said, “You stay with Destin-ak and do your duty. I will find out if there is any risk from the people following us.”

Alex could see that Ristan-ak was fighting a battle within himself to say something more. Finally, he turned and prepared to leave.

Before she abandoned him to his fate, Versa-eh took one more stab at staying with him.

“If there is trouble, it would be better if there were two of us here.”

“If there is trouble, I want to make sure that one of us is still here to get to our daughters,” Alex answered.

Versa-eh obviously didn’t like leaving without him, but she finally mounted up and caught up to the rest.

Alex fetched water from the stream and put their fire out, sending a plume of bluish-gray smoke into the air. He put his bags across the back of his horse and led her into the woods. After tying her to a tree there, he climbed onto a lower branch where he was well-hidden by leaves. He looked down at Monda-ak. “Just lie down and rest. Enjoy a morning off from the trail. We’ll be on our way soon enough.”

Alex sat comfortably, prepared to wait for several hours until their pursuers finally arrived.

In his heart, Alex was not sure what he would do when they arrived. He knew he could not fight all of them, even with Monda-ak by his side. He also knew that though he was well-hidden in the tree, with his horse and Monda-ak below him, he could not count on going undiscovered when they passed by. More than anything, he was tired of being in the dark and uncomfortable with having a possible enemy at his back.

As he sat and thought, that idea gave him a new perspective on how Sekun-ak felt about having the Drakana so close to the caves of Winten-ah.

Alex planned on sitting on the limb for a few hours waiting for them to arrive. Instead, after less than half an hour, he saw a lone rider come up over the hill.
